What Is A Level 2 (ASP) Electrician?
ASP; Accredited Service Provider. An ASP Level 2 Electrician is licenced and trained to provide extensive installation, repairs and maintenance needed to overhead and underground service lines between your home and the electricity network in the street. A Level 2 electrician NSW is authorised to work on or, near electrical service networks like Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy. A Level 2 electrician also handles metering equipment and live wire connection in accordance with the Australian Wiring Rules and Regulations (AS NZS 3000:2018).

How Do I Get My Level 2 (ASP) Electrical Qualification?
To maintain and ensure the quality and safety of the electrical networks and its connection to the distribution networks; only an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) Level 2 electrician who operates under the ASP scheme administered by NSW Trade & Investment is legally allowed to perform any of this work.
1. Complete Your Electrical Contractors Licence (Electrical Apprenticeship)
In order to receive your Level 2 electrical qualification and operate under the ASP scheme, you must first have your electrical contractors license. This generally requires completing an electrical apprenticeship. An electrical apprenticeship consists of 4 years practical, on-site learning, as well as 3 years studying 1 day a week at TAFE.
2. Choose Which ASP Class And Level You Would Like To Work On
The ASP scheme is broken down into 3 levels and the services that can be undertaken (but not limited to) by a Level 2 (ASP) electrician are broken down into 4 classes (formerly known as categories):
- Level 1 electrician: A Level 1 electrician can undergo both overhead and underground construction work on distribution networks which are located adjacent to the roadway.
- Level 2 electrician: A Level 2 electrician can undergo the construction of service lines between the distribution system and, the point of attachment to the residential or, commercial premises. A Level 2 electrician is responsible for the installation and connection of metering services.
- Level 3 electrician: A Level 3 electrician can work with the design of distribution networks.
- Class 2A – Service line disconnect and reconnect.
- Class 2B – Work on underground service conductors
- Class 2C – Work on overhead service conductors.
- Class 2D – Installing metering for meter types 5 and 6 plus other network operator service equipment.
3. Find Level 2 ASP Training Near You
Coast Complete Electrical Solutions business partners Ryan and Dylan, both completed their qualifications through Level 2 ASP Training Hunter Tafe. You must fill out all the necessary paperwork and have all the mandatory requirements ready in order to apply for the 1-week course. Once accepted you will have to pay the fee and successfully complete the 1 week 14-hour course.
4. Apply For Accreditation
Once you have completed the one week course successfully and have finalised all payments. You will receive your accreditation from TAFE (or whoever put you through your necessary training).
5. Apply For Authorization
Once you have received your course accreditation, you must fill out all relevant paperwork and send to the authority whether it’s Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, or one of the other supply networks. They will then organise a meeting at their depot where they will check that you have all the mandatory Level 2 Electrician equipment like your accreditation, safety equipment and testing equipment before signing you off as an authority.
6. Start Working Safely As A Qualified Level 2 (ASP) Electrician
Now you are authorised, you can legally conduct Level 2 ASP work that you are qualified in. Remember to be safe and responsible as it is a whole new level of electricity… Literally! You will be given a refresher training course every year. They will refresh all the authority safety rules and the work you are qualified to conduct. You will also be audited every year to ensure you are performing your work as per standards and rules in order to keep your Level 2 (ASP) electrical qualifications.
